Clan Sutherland's Dunrobin Castle, Scotland, Gifts
Sutherlands around the world can enjoy unique gifts that celebrate their ancient Scottish Clan Sutherland heritage and its history at Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Scotland. DNA is revealing that nearly all Sutherlands testing -- of any spelling: Southerland, Sutherlin, Southerlan, etc. -- have DNA of the family's founder: Freskyn. It is there in the autosomal even if the yDNA is different. For centuries, the family has lived and emigrated from the area around the Moray Firth in northeastern Scotland, about a mile north of Golspie. Dunrobin Castle is the historic seat of the Sutherland clan and one of the great houses in the country. The castle and its garden are open for tours.
Some of the structure is ancient, but much is relatively new, dating from the 1800s. However, the lands of Sutherland, as much as one million acres, were acquired before 1211 by Hugh de Moravia, Lord of Duffus, grandson of the Flemish nobleman Freskin. Hugh’s son William became the first Earl of Sutherland about 1235.
The Earldom of Sutherland can descend to either a male or female, while the Dukedom descends through the male line only. Thus, the two titles have separated over the years and are held by different people.
