Colquhoun/Calhoun Clan's Dunglass Castle Scotland
Colquhouns and Calhouns around the world can enjoy unique gifts that celebrate their ancient Scottish heritage and its history at Dunglass Castle. More than one family estate in Scotland bears the name of Dunglass Castle. According to the Colquhoun Society’s website, the original lands of the family of Colquhoun were along the river Clyde at the village of Kilpatrick, where Unfridus de Kilpatrick had his holding, granted by the 3rd Earl of Lennox about 1219. Unfridus de Kilpatrick has been modernised as Humphrey of Kilpatrick. He adopted the surname Colquhoun. Its pronunciation has led to some family members spelling the name Calhoun.
The castle is thought to have been built about 1380, and is known to have been the residence of Sir. John Colquhoun, Chamberlain of Scotland, from 1439-1478.
The Colquhouns also had extensive history with Dumbarton Castle, where they served as governors, beginning with the above Sir John’s grandfather, Sir John Colquhoun, in 1424.
In the 1930s, the British Mexican Petroleum Co. Ltd constructed an oil terminal to the east of the castle, creating an industrial site. It is unavailable to the public.
