Edward Burne–Jones Collection
Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British artist, illustrator and designer closely associated with the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Romanticism and Aestheticism. His flowing lines and the rhythmic forms of his designs helped shape the emerging Art Nouveau style. He also worked with stained glass, ceramic tiles, jewellery, tapestries, and mosaics. He hated modernist art such as Impressionism and described their subjects as "landscape and whores". His own view of painting was "I mean by a picture a beautiful romantic dream, of something that never was, never will be—in a light better than any that ever shone—in a land no-one can define or remember, only desire—and the forms divinely beautiful."
