Japanese Prints Floating World of Edo

Floating/Fleeting/Transient world") is the Japanese term used to describe the urban lifestyle and culture, especially the pleasure-seeking aspects, of Edo period Japan (1600–1867). Ukiyo culture developed in Yoshiwara, the licensed red-light district of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), the site of many brothels frequented by Japan's growing middle class. Toyohara Kunichika was a ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock print artist. Talented as a child, at about thirteen he became a student of Tokyo's then-leading print maker, Utagawa Kunisada. This is a traditional Japanese Ukyio-e style illustration which has been restored and the colour enhanced.Ukiyo (浮世)
