St. Apollonia (BLA 001) COLLECTION

We like our saints pretty. Although historical sources describe her as “an admirable virgin of advanced age”, St. Apollonia (died c. 249) is more usually portrayed as a young, very beautiful woman. Despite having her teeth knocked or pulled out, here she looks out at us with calm serenity and a subtle smile. Only a single tooth held in pincers alludes to the torture she endured that resulted in her being named patron of dentistry. + For an interesting article by a dentist on her youthening, see catholicsaints.info/saint-apollonia-the-patron-saint-of-dentistry/ + The palette for St. Apollonia’s roundel consists of the following recommended colors (with hex codes): medium yellow green (#868720), dark yellow green (#586010), dark green (#2B4D11), brownish black (#341A00), off white (#D1C397), dull medium orange yellow (#C0923C), bright medium orange yellow (#CD7E17), darker orange yellow (#C16E31), medium pink orange (#CB5B37), dark orange red (#B14411), and dark red (#8F2A0F).
