Vintage bird poster. John Gould was a 19th-century English ornithologist and bird artist who made significant contributions to the field of natural history. He produced numerous illustrated bird books, including "The Birds of Europe" and "The Birds of Great Britain," and collaborated with Charles Darwin on "The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle." Gould's work was notable for its attention to detail and scientific accuracy, as well as its artistic beauty. He was also a pioneer in the use of bird skins for scientific study, and identified and described many new species that had never been seen before. Today, he is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of ornithology.
