Charlie Jones Jr. grew up in Youngstown, OH. Being from a small city prompted him to find creative ways to stay entertained. He became interested in art at an early age and began this adventure by drawing people around him. As he matured, art became more of an expression of his inner thoughts. His work is truly an expression that is uniquely his own.
His formal training in architecture at Hampton University has added another layer to his artwork (i.e. scale, pattern, and form). Charlie is inspired by the work of John Biggers and particularly admires his use of pattern, form, and layering. In addition, he's driven by knowing that art is his avenue for expressing feelings and during the process, he can be creative.
Charlie mainly focuses on artwork produced by defining opposites, black and white, through the medium of charcoal and graphite. He feels that if he can be creative using these opposing forces, he can work with anything. He wants the viewer to not only understand his meaning behind the artwork but wants them to use their imagination to interpret his art as well. After all, there is no right or wrong answer! Charlie is delighted to learn what moves the viewer.
