I cut them out of magazines, dressed them in my own way, went on to study fashion and in 1989 took my first step into the world of haute couture. I spent the first ten years of my career working for other designers, before deciding to chart my own course by starting a line and opening my own store. Because my work was influenced so strongly by painters. I also took the somewhat unorthodox step of exhibiting my designs in galleries, and juxtaposing it with the work of new artists. My vision resonated with others and I soon found my work exhibited in Croatia, Italy, Germany, France, and Sweden. But as fate would have it, and though I did not know it at the time, my Stockholm exhibit at Gallery Kimbi was to be my last exhibition in Europe. Soon thereafter, I found myself in Los Angeles, presenting my work, and thinking I was just a temporary visitor. But as circumstances in my homeland changed and chances in California presented themselves, I eventually found myself starting a life in Los Angeles. I am an artist, and I am celebrating this very moment. I was once called "an outlaw", "a curiosity", and "a stubborn dreamer". But one thing I have never been called is a conformist. And the same is true of my customers: they are the ones who were never content to go with the flow, and the ones always courageous enough to have a style that is truly personal. New civilizations can inspire new concepts. New music can inspire new rhythms. Nature itself can inspire texture. I too have drawn inspiration from all that was new in my life. My designs are more personal than ever. My artworks are a mélange of warm sands from the sunny coast of Mexico, dark green leaves from the forest of my native Croatia, a synaesthetic translation of my best friend's laugh in the cold morning breeze and the purple sunsets from the beaches of Santa Monica. My artwork is a blend of photography, illustration and the graphic design which requires immense creativity along with the expertise in photo editing tools and also requires substantial patience, as you may need to do various experiments with different effects in order to achieve the required result. A style is a final decision based on a series of choices. My relationship with my customers is based on the idea that the choices are theirs to make, and that by offering my vision I can help them reveal who they are, or maybe even who they want to be. My new collection is about love - a love for life, and the freedom to express it.
